Washington, D.C.

Defenders of Wildlife president and CEO Andrew Bowman today issued the following statement in response to Congressman’s Raúl M. Grijalva’s (D-Ariz.) decision to step down from his role as Ranking Member on the House Natural Resource Committee:

“As the Ranking Member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, Rep. Grijalva has been a fierce champion and tenacious defender of our nation’s wildlife and natural resources. We applaud his tireless and effective work to protect the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act and so many other bedrock conservation and environmental laws that help protect our vast, yet imperiled, natural treasures. In recognition of his crucial efforts, Defenders of Wildlife presented Rep. Grijalva with our Spirit of Defenders Public Service award in 2015. Since that time, his leadership has been even more important in defending our wildlife and natural resources from unrelenting legislative attacks. We look forward to continuing our work with Rep. Grijalva and to working with the next Ranking Member to safeguard our nation’s wildlife and wild places.”

Rep. Grijalva has served as both Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Natural Resources during his career in the U.S. House of Representatives.
