Representative John DingellToday, Defenders of Wildlife will be honoring some true wildlife heroes at our annual awards dinner. This year’s honorees include John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), the longest serving member in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives. For more than 50 years, Rep. Dingell has championed wildlife and the environment, making him a natural choice for the Defenders of Wildlife Legacy Award.

Dr. J. Michael ScottOther 2010 awardees include Dr. J. Michael Scott, a 36-year veteran biologist with the Department of the Interior known for bringing innovative science to bear on federal wildlife protection policies and decisions, and this year’s recipient of the Spirit of Defenders Award for Public Service.

Dr. Terry L. RootThe Spirit of Defenders Award for Science goes to Dr. Terry L. Root, whose research on wildlife populations and their distributions in response to climate change has served as a wake-up call for conservationists and natural resource managers around the world.

Joel SartoreDefenders’ 2010 Spirit of Defenders Award for Citizen Advocacy recognizes acclaimed wildlife photographer and author Joel Sartore, whose work highlighting endangered species and their habitats has regularly appeared in National Geographic Magazine over the past two decades.

We’ll be talking with our award recipients and other notables at the dinner tonight to get their personal takes on Defenders’ work.
