In a striking case of deja-vu, another oil rig platform has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. Located 80 miles from Vermilion Bay, La. (west of the site of BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig explosion), the platform was not “producing any product,” according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough, and does not seem to be polluting Gulf waters. All 13 crew members are said to have safely evacuated the rig. The Department of Homeland Security reported the platform – owned by Mariner Energy in Houston- had been operating at a depth of 2500 feet.

Defenders will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
